The Garland, Texas, community is mourning the death of a 5-year-old girl who was found unresponsive inside a vehicle and later died at a hospital, as police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
Garland police and firefighters responded to a home on Redbird Drive at approximately 8:20 p.m. after receiving a report of a medical emergency involving the child. When first responders arrived, family members were already attempting lifesaving measures, including CPR, on the unresponsive girl.
The child was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead despite continued efforts to save her life.
Police said their preliminary investigation found that an adult family member had returned home from school with the girl and her sibling. The sibling exited the vehicle, while the 5-year-old remained inside. The adult family member then went into the home.
Family members later realized the girl was missing and began searching for her. She was eventually discovered unresponsive inside the vehicle, prompting the family to call 911 and begin CPR before emergency crews arrived.
Authorities have identified the child as 5-year-old Jean-Paul Faustina. Police said the investigation is ongoing as detectives work to establish exactly how long the child remained inside the vehicle and reconstruct the events leading to her death.
The incident occurred during a period of extreme heat in North Texas. Temperatures at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport reached 104 degrees on Tuesday, while temperatures were still around 100 degrees later in the evening, according to reports. Investigators are expected to consider the heat and the amount of time the child spent inside the vehicle as part of their inquiry.
No charges have been filed at this time. Police have not announced whether anyone may ultimately face criminal charges, emphasizing that the investigation remains active. A medical examiner is also expected to conduct an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.
Garland police said counseling services will be offered to the family following the devastating loss.
The death has highlighted once again the potentially deadly conditions that can develop inside vehicles during extreme heat. Even when outdoor temperatures do not appear exceptionally high, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly, creating dangerous conditions for children.
For the girl’s family, the investigation follows an unimaginable loss. A young child who had her entire life ahead of her died after being found unresponsive in a vehicle, leaving loved ones and the wider Garland community grieving.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Jean-Paul Faustina’s death, and further information may be released as investigators complete their work.
